06/17/2007: "The Baby Daddy"
Dear Dave,
On this, your first Father's Day, the only thing I can say is Thank You. I know that things have not been easy since Dessa was born - I am not the most stable rock on the block, what with the hormones and my endless fears. You've been patient and supportive and just incredible. Every time I break into tears you're there with a hug, which is everything I really need right then. So even though Father's Day is about fathers, I want you to know that since you became a father, you're an even more amazing husband than ever.
It is a true joy to watch you with your daughter. You are so tender with her and listening to you talk to her, I know she has the best daddy she could ever want. You're funny and entertaining and so sweet - nobody could doubt for a minute your love for her. Dessa will grow up knowing that she is loved and that her Daddy is always on her side, which is such a gift. She may fight you and argue with you and make you angry, but she can only do those things if she is secure in your love for her - she wouldn't risk it otherwise. Right now she can't smile at us or tell us what she needs or really interact with us, but that's all coming soon. I have no doubt that her first smiles will be for you and her first words with be for you and her hugs and milky kisses will make this sleepless time a distant and sweet memory.
Thank you, Dave. For Dessa and for me.
I love you.

My Love
If I can be there
to hold your hand
or
to give you a shoulder to rest your head on
or
to hold the fussy baby in my arms until 5am
so you can get some sleep
or
to just kiss the tears away
then
I consider it an honor and a privilege
and
I am happy to do it.
If that's what love is
then that's one more way
I love you.
Happy (cheated out of it by two weeks) Mother's Day!
