On August 15, 2004, some 20 people gathered in my parents' backyard to celebrate the birth of my mother by throwing pies at one another. The amazing thing was not that grown people were throwing pies with abandon into one another's faces, but that this was the second time in the history of my parents' backyard that they had done so. Silly? Yes. Messy? You know it. Fun?
